The Alex Awards are given annually to young adult books that have "special appeal to reluctant readers." The awards are named after Alex Haley, the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Roots. The Alex Awards were established in 1998 by the American Library Association's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).
