Champagne Tony Lema was born in Castro de Rey, Spain, on May 15, 1934. He was the son of a farmer and a schoolteacher. Lema began playing golf at the age of 12. He quickly showed a natural talent for the game and won several junior tournaments. In 1954, he turned professional.

Lema's professional career got off to a slow start. He struggled to make a name for himself on the European Tour. However, in 1962, he won the Spanish Open. This victory gave him the confidence he needed to compete at the highest level.

In 1964, Lema made his debut on the PGA Tour. He quickly became one of the most popular players on tour. He was known for his aggressive style of play and his flamboyant personality. Lema was also a master showman. He loved to entertain the crowds with his trick shots and his witty banter.

Lema's first PGA Tour victory came in 1965 at the Phoenix Open. He went on to win a total of 13 PGA Tour events, including two major championships. In 1964, he won the British Open at Royal Birkdale. In 1975, he won the PGA Championship at Firestone Country Club.

Lema was also a member of the winning Ryder Cup team in 1969. He was one of the most popular players on the team and helped to lead the Europeans to victory.

Off the course, Lema was known for his love of the good life. He was a frequent visitor to nightclubs and parties. He was also a heavy smoker and drinker.
