Dan Jenkins was one of the most beloved and respected golf writers of all time. His unique blend of humor, insight, and storytelling made his work a joy to read for golfers and non-golfers alike.

Jenkins was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1928. He began his writing career as a sports reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In 1956, he joined the staff of Sports Illustrated, where he would remain for the next 40 years. During his time at Sports Illustrated, Jenkins wrote more than 1,000 articles about golf, as well as several books.

Jenkins' writing was known for its wit, humor, and insight. He had a gift for capturing the essence of the game of golf, and for making readers feel like they were right there with him on the course. He also had a keen eye for the human side of the game, and his writing often explored the motivations and emotions of the players he wrote about.

One of the most memorable moments in Jenkins' career came in 1974, when he wrote a cover story for Sports Illustrated about the Masters Tournament. The story, titled "The Greatest Day," chronicled the final round of the tournament, which was won by Gary Player. Jenkins' writing captured the drama and excitement of the day, and his story is still considered one of the best pieces of golf writing ever written.

Jenkins retired from Sports Illustrated in 1996, but he continued to write about golf for other publications. He also wrote several more books, including his memoir, "Off the Fairway." Jenkins died in 2012 at the age of 83.

Jenkins' legacy as a golf writer is secure. He was one of the most influential and respected writers of his generation, and his work continues to be enjoyed by golfers and non-golfers alike. He was a true master of the craft, and his writing will continue to inspire and entertain for years to come.

Some of Jenkins' Most Memorable Quotes

  • "Golf is the greatest game on earth, except when you're playing it."
  • "The only sure thing about golf is that it will humble you."
  • "The secret to good golf is to keep your head down and your score up."
  • "Golf is a game of inches - the more inches you have, the better off you are."
  • "The best thing about golf is that you can play it poorly and still have a great time."

Dan Jenkins was a true legend of golf writing. His wit, humor, and insight made his work a joy to read for golfers and non-golfers alike. He was a master of the craft, and his legacy will continue to inspire and entertain for years to come.
