Chapter 1: Early Life and Arrival in South Africa

William Charles Baldwin was born in England in 1827. He was the son of a military officer and spent his early years in India. In 1842, at the age of 15, he joined the British Army and served in the Cape Colony. He later resigned from the army and became a professional hunter and trader.

In 1852, Baldwin arrived in South Africa. He quickly became known as a skilled hunter and soon established himself as a successful trader. He spent the next nine years hunting and exploring in the interior of the country. He traveled extensively throughout the region, from the Cape Colony to the Orange River Sovereignty and the Transvaal.
